One of the top new years’ resolutions (apart from losing weight) is to travel more. While everyone has good intentions in January, by February all resolutions are forgotten.
Why not make your travel plans happen this year by following these 7 steps on how to make your dream destination a reality in 2017.
Where do you want to go?
Where do you want to travel to this year? Do you want to take one big holiday or a number of small breaks? Is your plan to do a round the world trip or travel the four corners of your own country? Once as you have an idea of the places you want to go you can start making a plan on how to reach that goal.
Research is key when planning a holiday. If you are going to a country that is far away the flights may be expensive. Sometimes I see great cheap flights to Iceland however, Iceland accommodation, drinks, and food can be pricey. Once you have an idea of how much your travel plans are going to cost, you can start budgeting
Have a look at your finances and see where you can save money. For example, if your contract is out for your broadband, ring up the company and threaten to cancel, they will always offer you a better deal reducing expenses. Look at your income and outgoings and see if there is a certain amount you can save each month If you get paid on a weekly basis put all the change that is left in your wallet into a savings jar at the end of each week. I saved nearly 800 euros in 6 months by just saving some loose change.
Are you in a job where there are certain times of the year you have holidays? Look at the times of the year where you take time off and when it is the cheapest to go to your holiday destination. If you are in a job where you get bank holidays off, use this to your advantage. If you want to know about how to make the most of your annual leave for holidays read this blog post
Create a plan.
Once as you have all the information gathered, make a plan when you are going to travel and when you need to book the holiday. If you are travelling on a domestic flight or to a nearby country you only need to book a flight 6-8 weeks in advance whereas for a longer more international flight 10-14 weeks is the time to book to get the best deal.
Sign up to mailing lists
There are certain airlines such as Aer Lingus, Ryanair, KLM and Delta Airlines that give great deals throughout the year, especially in January. A number of hotel websites such as Booking.com also do secret deals for their members. Sign up to their mailing lists and hear about the deals on offer first.
