50 Shades Darker: the unusual reason why I won’t be watching this topical cult movie

The sequel for 50 Shades Darker is being released this week and while many women will be flocking to the cinema to watch it, I will not be one of them.

The 50 Shades franchise has been surrounded by controversy especially in relation to the concern regarding promoting violence against women. This is not the main reason I won’t be attending the cinema to watch it. The real reason is the noise.

I don’t mean weird erotic noises coming from the movie itself I’m talking about the noise from the people watching the movie.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the cinema

I am a regular cinema go-er. It would not be unusual for me to go to the cinema more than once a week. I love the atmosphere of the cinema, the popcorn, the big screen. There is something nice about going to the cinema and just switching off without any distractions.

When 50 Shades of Grey was released in the cinema, a group of my friends suggested going. I was happy to tag along. Even though I was not really interested in the movie, I was still curious to find out more about the film everyone was talking about.

50 Shades Fans are a noisy bunch

As you can imagine the cinema screening was full of women attending. As I was searching for my seat, I noticed there was quite a significant amount of talking. This is normal before a film starts but for some reason, it seemed louder than normal levels you would expect at the cinema. However, this talking continued throughout the WHOLE movie.

I love Cult Movies

Normally I don’t mind audience participation at the cinema. I have been to cult movies where there is more of a relaxed community atmosphere than at a regular movie. I once attended a Quintin Tarrintino marathon where three movies were shown back to back. Even though on occasion people were shouting at the movie or laughing a lot, it was entertaining. Last year I was at the Jameson Cult Film Club were during a screening of Rocky, someone shouted, “you go Rock” to which everyone burst out laughing.

50 Shades Drama

This audience noise at 50 Shades of Grey was a different level. It was just a continuous talking with no attention to the movie and no consideration for others. There was one girl sitting in front of me who spent the majority of the movie on her phone. Now normally this doesn’t annoy me too much but this person didn’t even consider putting her phone on silent so it kept making noise every 5 minutes.

I don’t know why this movie was so different to others. I love supporting Irish actors and I enjoy Jamie Dornan’s performances in general. Unfortunately I’m going to have to give this one a miss. If you so happen to be attending 50 Shades Darker, please consider others and keep the taking to a minimum, at least until after the movie.
