This particular winding stretch of road takes you through the mountain range along the edge of Kerry and West Cork.
Having a day in Kerry with nothing to do I decided to take a road trip to the Healy Pass. The whole trip took the full day to travel with a few stops along the way.
I started out my trip from Killarney and stopped at the Avoca Shop at Molls Gap– the beginning of the Ring of Kerry. I had a lovely lunch there and although the desserts looked tempting, I decided to continue on my travels and stop somewhere along the way.
The Ring of Kerry
To get to the Healy Pass you have to drive along part of the ring of Kerry which has stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and some of the local towns and villages. While the Ring of Kerry is beautiful on any day, the weather was unusually good on that particular day making the views even more beautiful.
Detour to Bantry
The Healy Pass is very close to West Cork so I decided to take a detour to Bantry. I had lovely tea and cake in The Stuffed Olive which is on a street just off the main square. They also had really nice salads and other tasty treats if you were in the mood for more.
Driving through the Healy Pass
While driving up the Healy Pass is entertaining and ruggedly beautiful , the most stunning views are when you get over the Pass and look down onto the lakes and valleys below. It was the most beautiful views of the trip and well worth the drive to get there.
On the drive home, I stopped in Kenmare for some dinner. There are many pubs and restaurants in Kenmare to suit all tastes and budgets.
Overall it was a lovely drive and a great road trip. If you are travelling around Kerry and have the time I recommend doing this trip.
