Handy tricks to clear your iPhone storage space

While having iCloud storage has helped reduce the stress of running out of space on your iPhone, that dreaded alert does come up every now and again “NOT ENOUGH STORAGE AVAILABLE”.

What to do when this happens?

There are some really handy tricks that will help you save some space on your iPhone without having to delete those beloved selfies.

1. See what apps are taking up most of your space

Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > manage storage. From here you can see what apps are taking up the most space and decide if you need to delete them. When you click on the apps themselves you can see how much data the app has stored. (like music saved on Spotify or texts on a messaging app) you may be surprised that game you downloaded from the app store and never played might be hogging your storage.

In the Autumn with the ios10 release users will now also be able to delete unwanted Apple apps.

2. Get rid of all the languages

Unless you are talking to friends abroad in several different languages you don’t need all those pre-installed languages from around the globe. Go to Settings > General > language and region. click edit on the right corner and delete those languages you don’t need.

3. Get rid of duplicate photos

when you are taking HDR photos the phone saves a duplicate of normal quality. In order to eliminate this go to Settings > Photos & Camera and deselect Keep Normal Photo

4. use a photo storage app

I always use dropbox to store my photos. you can download the app a set it up so all your photos save on your dropbox account giving you more space on your phone. If you don’t have the app, set up your account with this link and get some extra space for free on dropbox.

5. get rid of messages

iPhone saves all the messages you ever sent but do you really need them? Go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages to change how long your texts are kept for.

6. Increase your iCloud Storage

every iPhone automatically has 5 GB of iCloud storage for free. iCloud have some great price plans if you are willing to pay a bit extra a month. For 99 cent a month you can get 50GB of iCloud storage. Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > iCloud > manage storage > Change Storage Plan in order to update your price plan.

If you need space ASAP

There is nothing worse than being at a concert or event and suddenly not having enough room for photos. this trick is a lifesaver when you are in a jam. First, check out how much storage you have by going to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage.  Once you know how much storage you have, go to iTunes and try to download a movie that is bigger than the storage you have on your iPhone such as Lord of the Rings. (don’t worry about the price as you won’t need to pay) iTunes will return a notification saying you do not have enough storage however when you go back to the storage setting you will see your storage has been magically increased. I have been in situations where I have been frantically deleting photos and still not having enough room however this trick works every time.
