Ladybird is already getting great reviews across the pond. With Saoirse Ronan’s recent golden globes win on her performance, and an Oscar nod, I decided it was time to check out this movie myself.
Set in this small town in California, Christine or as she likes to be called Ladybird dreams of a life more extraordinary than the one she has. Living with her family she wants to set out into the world and find out more about what the world has to offer. The majority of the film takes place in her final year in Highschool. Ladybird has to deal with the issues of her age such as fitting in, the relationship with her mother, finding her place in the world and discovering the love of home.
The cast in this movie were excellent. Saoirse Ronan’s performance was outstanding. I loved Laurie Metcalf in particular as the mother and the difficulties of the onscreen relationship with Saoirse Ronan’s character. This created great tension and frustration in the film but you were also rooting for both characters to get along and repair their relationship. After Saoirse’s Golden Globes win for her performance, I wouldn’t be surprised if she wins the coveted Oscar as well.
What I thought of the movie
I think this is one of those movies that makes you think about life, love, and happiness, It is a lot like EAT, PRAY, LOVE. However, in this instance, the main character did not have to travel far to appreciate life and the things in life that are important. There is definitely some laughable moments in this film. There is a homely essence to this movie and something that will make you return to watch it again and again.
